Around 60 million metric tonnes of coconuts are produced each year. They are harvested for their water, oil and fleshy white meat. But what happens to the discarded shells and palm wood? Sadly, almost all of it goes to waste and is often disposed of by burning, which releases toxic emissions, such as carbon dioxide and methane, into the atmosphere.
